Who issues Seattle sign permits: Seattle Dept. of Construction & Inspections (SDCI). Applications via Seattle Services Portal at seattle.gov/sdci.

Overview

Seattle sign permits are issued by the Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI). Seattle's land use code is among the most complex in the U.S., with dozens of zone types and numerous overlay districts. The city has a tiered permit review process based on sign size and complexity.

Seattle prohibits most new outdoor advertising signs and has strict rules for signs in Pedestrian (P) designated zones, which require signs to be at pedestrian scale. Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square Historic District, and International District all have separate design review processes. Seattle also has one of the highest base permit fees in the country.
